Make soft baits with a Plastisol injector, incl. 5 Pro Tips!
In previous blogs we explained how we work with our Plastisol (see link under related posts). There we used so-called open molds. You don't need an injector for that. You simply pour into the mold from the top. In this blog we go into detail about how we can make soft baits with a Plastisol injector in combination with 3D jigs such as the Do-it essential series (ES) jigs.
So we're talking about Injection Softbait Pouring… What do we need to get off to a good start?
- A Plastisol Injector
- LUPA Plastisol. Available in Soft, Medium and Hard
- A (pyrex) cup / cups to warm up the Plastisol. Make sure it can withstand heat up to at least 200°C.
- A 3D mold. The inside diameter of the opening should be 16mm, like our Do-it Essential Molds
- Set Mold clamps to hold the mold together during casting.
- A set of heat-resistant gloves. The injector becomes very hot during the casting process…
- A mask in case your space is not properly ventilated.

In the 1st photo the 3D mold with the opening at the top. With this mold you can make 4 Grubs (twisters) in one go. The 2nd one shows the dismantled injector. Easy to clean and/or grease.

The first step is to add some mold oil to the mold. A small brush comes in handy here. Do not use too much oil. A few drops are sufficient. Make sure no excess oil remains in the cavities.

The next step is to close the mold and secure it with two mold clamps.

Now it's time to heat up the Plastisol/Plastic. The volume you need to heat up depends on the maximum volume of your injector and the number of soft baits you want to make. Recommended temperature is approximately 180°C. A digital thermometer is recommended here.

Now it's time to suck up the Plastisol with the Plastisol Injector. Make sure you wear heat resistant gloves as the injector gets very hot.
PLEASE NOTE: this injector does not have a locking pin. So be careful when using it. Especially when opening the injector, it can happen that the nozzle accidentally comes out with force under high pressure. You can use a knife to remove the mouthpiece.

When you use the plastisol injector, you don't have to push hard. After a few rounds you will know how much pressure is needed to achieve optimal results. Filling the mold is very important. The Plastisol tends to shrink slightly as it cools. For the best result, filling the mold is a must.
Besides, it doesn't matter if you make a mess. Once cool, excess plastisol can be easily removed from the mold or even the table.

The photo shows the end result; 4 Twisters for fishing for bass, pike-perch or pike.

To turn these Twisters into two-color Twisters, there is a simple trick. First you need to cast the Twisters in the color you need for the tail. Then you cut off the body of the Twister. The body parts are not waste because you can melt them again. Now carefully close the mold again and pour in the color you need for the body…

End result… The tails and bodies are well fused together.
5 Tips!
- Wear protection for your hands, eyes and respiratory tract
- Use moderate force when using the Plastisol Injector
- Use the 'Trick' mentioned above to make two-tone Softbaits
- Use a blade to carefully open the injector. Gloves on!
- Lightly grease the injector before use. This is for optimal release of the end result
