Tuning Pike Spinnerbaits: 3 great tips!

Pike Spinnerbaits, which pike fisherman doesn't know them? Over the years, we at Lureparts have gained the necessary experience in making Snoek Spinnerbaits. It is a relatively easy bait to make and it also catches very well, both in summer and winter.

Pike Spinnerbait

Let me introduce you: The spinnerbait.

This bait usually has 1 or 2 blades and is almost always decorated with some silicone skirts. They can be purchased ready-made or made in all kinds of weights, from 5 grams to 200 grams. The first mentioned is intended for bass, for example, while the 200 gram one is intended for deep fishing or towing behind the boat, so-called trolling.

The lead acts as a kind of keel on a spinnerbait. The silicone skirts and blades act as triggers for the predatory fish.

When fishing with a spinnerbait you often see that a spinnerbait does not run straight. He will still catch his fish, but especially in overgrown water, for which a spinnerbait is made, walking at an angle is not desirable. You will often snag dirt (plants) and therefore miss fish unnecessarily. Below you can read why this misalignment occurs and what you can do about it.

Cause (tip) 1 : Components do not match

When the spinner blade and head do not match, the spinner blade pulls the head into the same horizontal plane. In other words, the keel cannot do its job properly due to the upward pressure of the blade. For example, a willowleaf size 7 should not be used on a 14gram head. A size 4 fits much better here. You can read which components fit together in the component matrix below.

SPB2

The Spinnerbait Components Matrix

The Matrix shows, among other things, that a spinnerbait with a 28 gram head needs a willow blade 5 or 6 to work optimally. A double-bladed spinnerbait with the same weight also needs a size 5/6 willowleaf on the back, but needs a size 4 colorado /willow(leaf) as the shaft blade.

The component matrix therefore provides insight into which components fit together. But be careful, even if the components are matched according to the matrix, the spinnerbait can still run crooked. Then it's time to tune your spinner bait

Cause (tip) 2: Wire is not perpendicular above the head

'Tuning' is a well-known concept for a crooked plug. This means adjusting the mounting eye by bending the eye slightly to the left or right with pliers. This often allows you to get the plug to run straight again.

We also apply this to spinnerbaits. The upper arm of the spinnerbait must be directly above the forearm and the head. These must, as it were, be in the same vertical plane. If this is not the case, despite well-chosen components, your spinnerbait will not go straight through the water. This is easy to solve by bending it a bit here and there with pliers.

The upper arm is not directly above the forearm; the spinnerbait will run crooked

SPB4

Now the upper arm is directly above the forearm

And even now it may still be that the pike spinnerbait is not running properly. This could have one other cause. The head cannot do its job well as a keel.

Cause (tip) 3: The head cannot do its job well as a keel.

That brings us to the final cause of crooked walking. In practice we have found that the Head works optimally at an angle of approximately 30 degrees. We always place the head at an angle of approximately 30 degrees to the wire. The photos clarify a lot here.

SPB5

Angle between wire and head is too small

SPB6

At an angle of approximately 30 degrees

That concludes this explanation of the causes of tuning a pike spinnerbait. Of course, this applies to both factory baits and baits that you make yourself... Take advantage of it :)
